This component is the heart of an industrial air starter
used to replace conventional electrical starters on trucks, buses and other commercial
vehicles. The impeller is used to convert air pressure into rotary motion, which is
subsequently transmitted to the flywheel ring gear via a gear reduction system. The
impeller spins up to 60,000RPM in a matter of seconds to generate the required power to
start the engine. The impeller is injection molded using a custom developed carbon
fiber reinforced UltemÒ PEI material possessing high strength
and modulus, dimensional stability, and fatigue properties to withstand years of starting
cycles.
Allegheny assisted in the selection and prototyping of various materials and in the
design of the injection tool to ensure that optimum performance from the resin material is
achieved for the application. Careful consideration and years of expertise were called
upon to ensure all aspects of gating technique, mold cooling, drafting, ejection, and
venting were designed correctly.
Once molded, the impellers are CNC machined to remove the diaphragm gate and bore the
inner diameter to hold + / - 0.001² .
